Village Fair II - Performers:
How did so many excellent musicians and entertainers come from one small place? And, how lucky are we that so many of Deep Cove's homegrown (musicians) are willing to donate their time and talents to help make Village Fair II take it's place in the pantheon of epic Deep Cove parties? We will have many of the same people and performers who made so many of the Cove bashes so memorable. I want to thank in advance, all these people who have been beyond generous - even to wildly enthusiastic - about coming home to party with both their enduring friends, and those of years past.
We are pleased to present:
We are pleased to present:
Auliya:
"Auliya is just breaking out in the Vancouver and Island music scene. Music has always been a huge part of her life, and since January 2012 she has been performing live at any opportunity. Auliya's first show was in Melaque, Mexico, at the Albatros Bar in January, where she received much encouragement to continue performing. Since then she has sung her original music at The Coffee Vault in Nanaimo, BC, for charity, as well as taking part in multiple Open Mics and Jams at The Diners Rendezvous, The Corner Lounge, The Queens and Serious Coffee in Nanaimo, BC. This is only the beginning."
Banbury Jam:
Banbury Jam is the musical talent of Bob Gaston, Fraser Gabbott, Colin Smith and Don Stenstrom. They leave the comfort of their living room jam sessions and make their way down to the Village Fair to play for us!

Danger Zone:
Ken Kerpan – Bass guitar and lead vocals - Kenny grew up hanging out with the Dollarton crowd so Cates Park was like our big backyard! Playing in the Windsor School band certainly planted that musical seed. After a long hiatus to have a family, he started as percussionist with “Dear John” for 10 years. Another long hiatus and Kenny picked up the guitar at 49 and then started the band “Slippery Slope” in 2006. Slippery Slope gigged 15-20 times a year for the next 5 years. Bars, Legions, outdoor festivals and community fairs all over the Lower Mainland. Highlights were playing to the crowds on the Plaza of Nations stage for 2 sets of original rock during the 2010 Olympics and supporting the United Way for the City of Burnaby to huge crowds with Ray Ayotte on drums. Kenny started playing bass guitar during the summer of 2010 and Slippery Slope did several gigs as a 3 piece until joined by Roy Gould on rhythm guitar in Spring 2011.. When Slippery Slope folded in January 2012, Kenny started a new band right away to fulfill some upcoming gigs, the first one being a large corporate Safety Fair in May of this year and out of that came the band name “Danger Zone”. It’s a thrill to have the opportunity to play for some of the old crowd. Thank you, Malcolm and everyone involved for putting this event together!
Roy Gould – Rhythm and lead guitar - Roy played professionally for many years in the Toronto area. After a hiatus of 30 years with family, he has been back playing the music he loves for 2 years now! Roy plays a vintage ’71 Gold Top Les Paul that he can make scream!
James Dimas – Lead guitar, rhythm guitar and vocals - Originally from Calgary (but we won’t hold that against him), James has been living in North Vancouver for 20 years. A huge Depeche Mode fan, James played in a Depeche Mode cover band for years. A multi talented instrumentalist and singer, James plays wild lead guitar, keyboards and drums. Truly amazing! Back in the day, James was short listed during auditions for The Red Hot Chili Peppers lead guitar!
Dan Brenner – Drums and percussion – Dan played professionally and gigged around the country for many years. He settled down to have a life and a government job for the last 20 years. Kenny met Dan in 2011 and asked him to audition for Slippery Slope when the drummer left in December 2011. Soon after that Slippery Slope slid down that final slope and Kenny asked Dan to play drums and percussion for the new band. Dan is the man that brings it altogether for Danger Zone!

Wil George:
Wil George is Coast Salish from Tsleil Waututh Nation (Burrard Indian Band) in North Vancouver. He is a poet and contemporary story-teller. Wil's poetry chapbook called Survival In It's Many Shapes is published by UNIT/PITT Projects (formerly Helen Pitt Gallery) in Vancouver. His poetry has been published in various anthologies and literary journals such as Salish Seas published by Aboriginal Writers Collective West Coast; In Our Own Voices: Learning and Teaching Toward Decolonisation edited by Proma Tagore published by Larkuma.
Libby Goines:
Extraordinarily talented professional musician/teacher dedicated to environmentalism, activism and life. Weaving a tapestry of life, love, music, beauty and passion both in her music and on her loom. Libby performs at many festivals and events with her very unique style that defies any simple description. Possessing a freedom in voicing made possible by the incredible instrument which is her voice, Libby Goines is able to create vast layers of feeling, yet with controlled emotion. Libby's range of style is well exemplifies on her 'Hope Mountain' CD where uses her large palette of shapes and shadings to create phrases which are Mozartian in their effect on the mind and soul. With her voice, Libby achieves an empathy with the listener that makes us feel involved in the story, or at least, wanting to be there...
Libby hails from the Cove and was writing her own music in high school at the time of the original Village Faire. Now living in Oregon, she has enthusiastically offered to come and sing for us. Also an accomplished weaver, Libby will be displaying her exquisite art with the other arts and crafts vendors. So talented in so many ways, listen to this song as see if you don't completely agree.

Martina Griffiths:

"A vocally dynamic performer, a natural story teller, with an awesome range" Vancouver-based vocalist Martina Griffiths is an eclectic compilation of standards and cover tunes, ranging from Prince's haunting ballad "When Doves Cry" and Bonnie Raitt 's"I Can't Make You Love Me" to the popular jazz standards "God Bless The Child" and "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon".
"I'm a Gemini., laughs Griffiths. "I am diverse. I enjoy exploring many different musical genres and all the emotional notes of an individual song. A vocalist is an interpreter and every song is open to interpretation. I enjoy exploring where a song can take me emotionally. Sometimes it may take me places I would have never expected. Music is a never ending adventure".

Hangman's Souvenir:
Matt Richards - Guitar/Vocals (Group 49, SNR1006)
Keith Aldridge - BOOM bass (Apostasy)
Eddy Dutchman - Drums (Liquer Kings, Eddy D, The Sex Bombs)
Sonny Dean - Guitar (Little Guitar Army, Snaggletooth)
Matt has come back to his roots to smack ya up the side of the head with this kick arse band!
Matt Richards: I like to describe our sound as The Cramps meet Led Zeppelin minus the heavy metal as played by The Ramones trying to sound like Tom Petty.
My background is from classical training in the early 80's at Cap College and many junior years in the school bands playing trumpet, trombone and flute. Following Cap College I had a "with" role in a production of "Jesus Christ Superstar" at the Centennial Theater in N.V. ( Some solo/duo singing parts ... not just chorus line). Following that I joined "Group 49" to do performance art on the streets of downtown Vancouver and performances at "The Western Front" and "The Pitt International Galley". We had a cassette tape release titled "An Electrical Storm" in '88. The early '90's took a more grunge approach with a band I put together called "SNR1006". We performed at various rock clubs around town. Then I got married and had kids and only had time to write songs and strum on the acoustic.

Robyn & Jim Jesson:
Robyn Jesson:
Not remembering a time without fiddle and bow in hand, Robyn Jesson was playing violin by the age of three. She tested her ‘chops’ along side her father, Jim’s, bluegrass band throughout elementary school and began booking her own gigs, performing the mix of Old Time, Bluegrass and Celtic music that she so loves.
Earning numerous recognitions, including three-time Old Time Fiddlers’ Provincial Champion, Western Canadian Champion, Canadian Grand Masters competitor and American Grand Masters finalist, Robyn continued to perform coast-to-coast across North America, from British Columbia and Washington to Ontario and Maine, down to Kentucky and Tennessee, and recorded her first album—Bluegrass and Beyond—at just 10 years old.
She has recorded with the Irish Rovers and Jennifer Hudson, opened for the Nitty Gritty Dirt band and performed with Gloria Estefan, U2’s the Edge, Juan Louis Guerra and many more.
Robyn recently graduated at the top of her class from the acclaimed Berklee College of Music in Boston. Her passion for new and traditional music shines through as she melds together a unique blend of folk music.

Jim Jesson:
When Jim was asked for his bio, this is what he said..."He's getting old, doesn't sleep as well anymore, pee's 2 times a night, and loves dogs!" But Jim is a Deep Cove boy from way back. Who can ever forget that famous mohawk! Jim accompanies his beautiful daughter Robyn on stage on guitar and I am thinking some vocals too. We're delighted to have them make the trip across the water to entertain us and join us in all of the festivities!

Suns of Jupiter:
Martin Elliott - Guitar and Vocals
John Regehr - Guitar and Vocals
Harvey McCormick- Bass Guitar
Kevin McBride - Drums
Ian Rosylo - Vocal and Percussion
This is as homegrown as it gets. It wouldn't be complete without you guys. Welcome back for another round at the Village Fair!
Deep Cove boys, Martin Elliott and John Regehr on guitars, with Eric Annable on drums played around Vancouver throughout the 70's. Martin got his start as a twelve year old on the front lawn of his parents house, at his sisters parties, and down at the old Fire Hall in Deep Cove. He started on an old Mandolin, took Piano lessons and then the Beatles came along and he found the guitar. He taught John Regehr his first chords and sold him his first guitar. John excelled and went on to tour with various bands across Canada and the USA. He played in Stanley Screamer with Ron Tabak of Prism fame before Ron was discovered and borrowed permanently by Lindsey Mitchell. Martin was doing sound and lights for them by this time. All three reconnected over the years for various projects and here they are again. Eric was a great talent and his untimely passing this past spring prompted a reformation that resulted in Kevin McBride joining the group. Kevin lives in Deep Cove and plays in various bands locally. His training includes some military drumming and is evident in his style. Our bass player Harvey McCormick, has played in many bands over the years and is currently involved in a few different projects including country and blues. Ian Rosylo, the vocalist is the latest addition to round out the group and brings his brand of range and flexibility to give The Suns Of Jupiter there unique blend of rock and blues power. Playing all original music this time around will add a new dimension to their long 45 year portfolio. See you at the Faire.
